Protecting our national icon through art

The Kiwi Art Trail raises funds to support kiwi, ensuring their journey from endangered to survival continues - something truly worth celebrating.

Returning for its third year, the Kiwi Art Trail, will make its South Island debut at Millbrook resort during the New Zealand Open from 23 February to 2 March 2026. As a major partner of the Open, we’re particularly excited to kick off this year’s trail at a location which already holds special significance for us.

This South Island location also carries added meaning as it coincides with the remarkable rediscovery of the kiwi pukupuku (little spotted kiwi) on the West Coast last year—once thought to be extinct on the mainland.

This trail is a celebration of New Zealand’s unique heritage and a vital initiative to raise funds for kiwi conservation, helping to bring this treasured species back from the brink of endangerment.

“As proud sponsors of the Kiwi Art Trail, Gallagher is committed to helping New Zealanders protect the things that are important to them so being part of the protection of our national icon is a special privilege,” said Gallagher Insurance CEO Carl O’Shea.

“It’s great to be bringing the trail to the South Island in 2026, offering people the chance to enjoy these unique artworks.”

Gallagher’s commitment to kiwi conservation began in 2019 with the establishment of the Kiwi Burrow in Taupō. Since then, over 430 kiwi have successfully hatched, and in 2025, we proudly renewed our partnership for another three years. Sponsoring the Kiwi Art Trail is a natural extension of this commitment, bringing the plight of the kiwi to the forefront of public consciousness while supporting local New Zealand artists.

Over $200,000 has been raised over the past two art trails, with funds directly supporting the next generation of kiwi hatched at the Kiwi Burrow.

The 2026 Kiwi Art Trail will showcase 17 stunning sculptures, beginning at the NewZealandGolfOpen at MillbrookResort from 23February to 2March, before moving to Bannockburn Wineries from 6to29March, and then across to the AlexandratoClyde cycle loop from 3to26April.

Stay connected with us on Facebook and Instagram for further updates.
