International travel tops the wish list for four out of five Kiwis in 2025, according to Southern Cross Travel Insurance’s Future of Travel report. With geopolitical unrest, natural disasters, and conflict defining the global environment at present, today’s travellers must navigate a world where plans can shift in an instant. That’s why understanding what your travel insurance covers, and what it doesn’t, is more important than ever.
As recent events have shown, conflict and unrest can unfold swiftly and at times in unexpected places. Travel insurers typically exclude destinations already experiencing conflict from their policies. Currently, this includes countries such as Israel, North Korea, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan, Iran, and Iraq. If conflict is well-publicised before you depart, it’s unlikely your travel insurance will cover related claims. However, if unrest emerges unexpectedly after you’ve already begun your journey, your policy is likely to provide cover.
According to the Future of Travel report, three out of four New Zealanders believe travel insurance is more important now that climate change has made weather patterns unpredictable and natural disasters more likely. Most travel policies cover unforeseen weather events that occur after the policy is purchased. However, it is important to note that there will be no cover for claims made on a new policy taken out after it is reasonably expected to be aware of the weather event, such as when a storm has been widely reported or a weather alert has been issued.
