What does contents insurance cover?

Contents insurance helps protect the personal items in your home, like furniture, clothing, bedding, rugs, electrical items, whiteware and other personal effects.

Some items—like jewellery or artwork—may only have limited cover unless they’re listed separately in your policy. If you have valuables, our brokers can help recommend the best way to make sure your items are properly protected.

Types of contents insurance

Personal contents

Covers your belongings for accidental loss or damage in your main home.

Flatters contents

Cover for people who are flatting or renting. Depending on how many people live in the home and the level of security, cover may be comprehensive or limited to specific events.

Holiday home contents

Covers items in your holiday home. This may include full cover or be limited to certain defined events.

Landlord contents

Covers items you leave in a rental property for tenants to use, such as fridges, stoves, washing machines, and other whiteware.

Calculating contents insurance

Your contents sum insured amount is the total amount your insurer would pay out in the event of a total loss to your contents.

You are responsible for setting your contents sum insured. The easy-to-use contents sum insured calculator can help you estimate the value of everything you own.

It’s important to ensure your contents sum insured is enough to cover everything you own—including special items like jewellery, watches, bikes, artwork, and hearing aids. If any of these are worth more than the standard limits, they may need to be listed separately in your policy.

If you underestimate the value of your contents, you could be left out of pocket if you need to replace everything—or even just one important item.
