Types of home insurance

Replacement sum house insurance

Provides cover for accidental loss and damage to your home.

Rental property insurance

Covers accidental loss or damage to your tenanted property. You can also add cover for tenancy-related issues like loss of rent, deliberate damage by tenants, and methamphetamine contamination.

Holiday house insurance

Covers accidental damage to your holiday home. Some policies can also include cover for loss of rent or methamphetamine contamination.

Sum insured

Most home insurance policies in New Zealand cover your house up to a set amount—called the sum insured. This is the maximum your insurer would pay (minus any excess) to rebuild your home if it’s completely destroyed or damaged beyond repair (total loss).

As a homeowner, you’re responsible for setting and updating your sum insured. It’s a good idea to review this regularly to account for any renovations or rising rebuild costs. That way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your cover is likely to be enough if the worst happens.
